Ms. Karen Burchardt Lewis, 76, Fayetteville, NC, transitioned into eternal life at her home on Monday, March 26, 2018.
She was born in Berlin, Germany to the union of Willy and Emma Burchardt on January 23, 1942. Other siblings include Rita, Gerd, and Daisy (sister-in-law), and Hannelore, all of Germany.
As a retiree of Kelly Springfield Tire Company, Fayetteville, NC, Karen organized collective action in support of workers’ rights and served as editor of the union newspaper. She was a life-long advocate of social justice and equality among all people, serving for decades as an active member of the A. Philip Randolph Institute, the AFL-CIO federation of labor unions, and her Neighborhood Watch program. Her tireless work in improving the lives of working people, including advocating for safe and healthy working conditions, has been recognized on numerous accounts, including an honorary recognition letter by Governor James B. Hunt and an award by the NC Occupational Safety and Health Project.
She leaves to her legacy one son, Gregory Lewis, Durham, NC and one granddaughter, Reyna Thomas-Cleron, Fayetteville, NC.
Funeral services will be conducted on Saturday, March 31, 2018 at 12 noon at Herring Funeral Care & Cremations Chapel.
