J. Jerusha Jefferson

Jessie Jerusha McCoy Jefferson of Broadell in Fayetteville, NC passed away in Bettendorf, IA Saturday, October 6, 2018.

Jerusha was born to Mary Frances McCoy and James McCoy August 17, 1941 in Laurinburg, NC.

 Jerusha was the eldest of four siblings: Bishop James E. McCoy, Bernita Buxton (Kernersville, NC) and  Carolyn Gilmore (Greensboro, NC).

Jessie Jerusha McCoy Jefferson  met Arthur L. Jefferson of Live Oak, Florida while attending Fayetteville State University. In November 27, 1964 Arthur and Jerusha married in Laurinburg, NC. Through this union, they had two children, Tyrone Eugene Jefferson who resides in Fayetteville, NC with his wife, Andre Denise Jefferson and their two children, Je’Lesa Noel Jefferson, Aaron Emanuel Jefferson; and Kelly Yulanda Jefferson who lives in Davenport, IA. Jerusha was raised in Franklin Chapel AME Zion Church and became a member of First Baptist Church of Moore Street, Fayetteville, NC while raising their children. She later returned to her AME Zion roots at Bethel AME Zion in Spring lake, NC. 

 Jerusha’s living in-laws are Shirley McCoy, James Buxton, Lillie Jefferson, Lorenzo Williams, Lattimore and Rosa Lee Williams and Elijah Tisdale. Jerusha has a host of nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews.

Jerusha graduated from Lincoln Heights High School in 1959 in  Laurinburg, NC. She graduated from Fayetteville State University in 1963 and received her Bachelors  of Arts in Intermediate Education and did extended studies at UCLA and other educational institutions to hone her language arts, science and educational management skills.

The funeral service will be held Friday, October 19, 2018 at Bethel AME Zion in Spring Lake, NC at 11:00am  (viewing at 10:00am), with burial to follow at Rockfish Memorial Park, Fayetteville, NC.
