LTC Paul Martin, US ARMY, Ret, 82, of Fayetteville died Monday, April 15, 2019 at First Health Hospice in West End.
Paul was born to the late Willie and Ruth Smoak Martin on August 21st 1936 in Smoaks, South Carolina. He is a 1955 graduate of Roberts High School in Holly Hill, South Carolina and a 1959 graduate of South Carolina State University in Orangeburg, South Carolina. He was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the United States Army in August of 1959. He served 21 years, including two tours of Vietnam and retired as a Lieutenant Colonel at Fort Bragg, North Carolina. After his military service he became a licensed real estate broker serving the Fayetteville area for 20 years. At an early age Paul joined Bethel AME Church in Holly Hill South Carolina and supported them throughout his life. He was active for many years in the Fayetteville, North Carolina Chapter of the South Carolina State Alumni Association, serving as an officer in many capacities.
Paul was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Charles Martin, sister, Mildred Martin Riley, sisters-in-law: Dorothy Latimore Sloan and Richard Lee Latimore Miller, brothers-in-law: Mitchum Banks, Frank Riley, Daniel Greene, and Melvin Sloan.
Funeral services will be conducted on Saturday at 12 noon at Herring Funeral Care & Cremations Chapel. Burial will follow in Rockfish Memorial Park with full military honors.
Paul is survived by his wife of 54 years Betty, son Patrick, eight siblings: Virginia Greene and Jeanette Banks, Arthur White, William (Gloria) Martin, Donell (Joyce) Martin, Cynthia (Joseph) James, all of Holly Hill, South Carolina, Jim (Celia) Martin of St. Petersburg, Florida, and Brenda K. Martin of Columbia, South Carolina; five sisters-in-law: Rebecca Latimore Jacobs of Orlando, Florida, Kathryn Latimore (Raymond) Martin of Greenville, South Carolina, Carolyn Latimore (Reginald) Means of Charlotte, North Carolina,
Theresa Rogers Martin of St. Petersburg, Florida, Gracie Hunter White of College Park, Georgia; three brothers-in-law: Charles (Linda) Latimore of Greenville, South Carolina, Robert Latimore of Covington, Georgia, and Michael (Cynthia) Latimore of Greenville, South Carolina, Franklin Miller of Covington, Georgia and many nieces, nephews, family, and friends.
A viewing will be held Saturday at the funeral home from 10am until noon, prior to the service.
