Mary Elizabeth Murray, 90, of 718 Shambrey Street, Fayetteville, passed away on Wednesday, June 26, 2024 at home.
Funeral services will be conducted on Friday, July 12, 2024 at 10:30 am at First Baptist Church, 302 Moore Street in Fayetteville. Burial will follow i the Sandhills State Veterans Cemetery, Fort Liberty.
Mary Elizabeth Burt Murray was born in Durham, North Carolina on June 9, 1934 to the late Joe Mims and Knoxie Burt. She was raised by her grandmother, Rosa Burt and mother, Knoxie Burt in Fuquay-Varina, North Carolina.
Mary attended school in Fuquay-Varina, North Carolina. She married her husband, James A. Murray, a young army soldier stationed at Fort Bragg, North Carolina on February 19, 1955. To this union a son, Alfred and a daughter, Ann were born. Mary was a devoted wife and mother, and was a stay at home mom for many years to lovingly take care of her family.
When her children were in middle school, Mary attended Fayetteville Technical Institute where she received her certification as a Nurse’s Assistant. She worked for several years at High-Smith Rainey Hospital. Mary was acknowledged and remembered for her professionalism and kindness when taking care of patients. Mary later worked as a bank teller at Fort Myer, Virginia when she and her husband moved to Fort McNair, Washington, DC for a military assignment.
Mary’s passion was cooking and baking. Everyone enjoyed her caramel, carrot and red velvet cakes that were made from scratch. Her cooking skills were well known. Mary also loved to do needlepoint, read, watch her favorite television shows and spend time with family and friends.
Mary was a member of the First Baptist Church.
Mary will always be remembered as a devoted and loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt and friend.
Mary was preceded in death by her parents; son Alfred; brothers Melvin Judd and Ervin Burt; and sister Martha Moore.
She leaves to cherish her memories; her husband of 69 years James Murray; one daughter Ann Raymond (Henry) of Baltimore, Maryland; daughter-in-law Jermaine Murray of Cheyenne, Wyoming; one brother Joseph Alston (Phyllis) of Baltimore, Maryland; one sister Rachel Turk (James) of Raleigh, North Carolina; three grandchildren, Janelle Murray, Alex Raymond and Amber Raymond; one great-grandchild Layla Tae Murray; nieces, nephews and a host of very special relatives and friends.
