Mrs. Pearl Bassett, 110, of Marion, Indiana, passed away on Monday, June 07, 2021 in Fayetteville, NC.

Pearl was a life­long res­i­dent of Mar­i­on, Indi­ana and was a civil rights pioneer. She was the first Demo­c­ra­t­ic Precinct Chair­woman in Grant Coun­ty, Indi­ana. She also served as the first Black Sec­re­tary of the Grant Coun­ty Demo­c­ra­t­ic Cen­tral Com­mit­tee and marched  in 1969 fight­ing for civ­il rights. Pearl was the recip­i­ent of many local, state, and nation­al hon­ors includ­ing the NAACP Unsung Hero­in Award; the Fran­cis Hook Award, the NAACP’s high­est hon­or for women; and the Cen­tu­ri­on Award, pre­sent­ed by Gov­er­nor Mike Pence in 2003. These awards are in response to her ground-shak­ing activism and devo­tion to the social and civ­il rights of African Americans.

Father Jim Warnock and I would like to share our condolences and respect.  During the years we lived in Marion, we did not know Mrs. Bassett well, but saw her at so many important community events.  We learned her story and stood in awe of her courage and leadership.  May God grant her soul eternal rest.

I thank Our heavenly father for all the things that he has done great and small, because of her life. I am sure that this world has truly been touched by her love, kindness and dedication to others. She has set such an amazing and truly beautiful example. Follow her example, She Truly knew the Way. Thank You Again LORD For such a blessing.

Condolences to the Bassett Family. Although we did not know Mrs. Bassett, what a historical legacy she leaves for her loved ones and the nation. She is truly an example of "Yes, We Can".
